MILLENNIUM HEIGHTS MEDICAL COMPLEX

VACANCY NOTICE

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for employment in the post of EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN at the Millennium Heights Medical Complex.

A.     OBJECTIVE AND RELATIONSHIP

  1. Provide care and transport for MHMC patients in keeping with competencies and level of training as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic.
  2. Required to respond and liaise daily with EMT Supervisor and Emergency Department Charge Nurse for clinical assignments for patient transport and assistance with A&E activities.

B.   MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Prepare for transport of patients by collecting brief medical history from patient and or caring nurse/physician. 
  2. Record and monitor vital signs of patients prior to and during transport.  
  3. Safely lift and maneuver patient in and out of ambulances, facilities, residences and other locations.
  4. Record and report observations and treatments during transport to receiving physician/nurse. 
  5. Document medical care given to patient at regular intervals during transport.
  6. Provide Basic Life Support interventions as required following assessment of patient to confirm cardio-pulmonary arrest.
  7. Under supervision of A&E Clinical staff, assist with assigned day-to-day activities in A&E in keeping with established scope of practice.  
  8. Under supervision of A&E clinical staff perform tasks within scope of practice to include but not limited to recording of vital signs; intravenous access; phlebotomy; ECG; glucose check; urinalysis; fracture immobilization; wound dressing.
  9. Assist as directed by A&E clinical staff with the triage and management of patients in mass casualty situations.
  10. Assist the A&E nursing staff with the monitoring of A&E patients while in waiting room or emergency area.
  11. Monitor and manage ambulance inventory maintaining checklist on a per shift basis.
  12. Check equipment for quality, downtime, and calibration from time to time for effective utilization. 
  13. Observe bio-medical waste management in ambulance.
  14. Ensure decontamination of ambulance after every patient transport.
  15. Upkeep of ambulance regarding cleanliness and maintenance of interior.
  16. Coordinate the movement of patient on discharge from hospital to home or another Health Care Organization/Centre.
  17. Maintain record of ambulance movement, logging dispatch, arrival and leave times.
  18. Required to work in shifts.
  19. Maintain a logbook of all calls received and all patient transport activities.
  20. Attend continuing education or refresher training as required by MHMC, licensing or certifying agencies.
  21. Perform any other duties as assigned by the EMT Supervisor and or HOD Accident and Emergency.

C.     KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES  

  1. Good speaking and listening skills. Ability to comprehend written instructions.
  2. Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  3. Proactive, punctual and empathetic.
  4. Ability to cope with the physical demands of the job.

D.     ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  1. High school diploma/GED
  2. Up to date Basic Life Support certification
  3. Current registration and licensure with Allied Health Council of St Lucia. 
  4. Minimum of 1 year of clinical experience as practicing Emergency Medical Technician.

F.  SALARY

          Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience
